I would like to see Sydney and some of New Zealand for the landscapes but also some of the desert interior. Is it feasible to do all of that in 2 to 3 weeks?

I am planning a trip to Australia and wanted to squeeze in a few days in New Zealand. What is the best and quickest (ie cheap) way to get from Australia (Sydney) to New Zealand. Is a ferry a good option?
