We are leaving after three years and yes without a doubt learn Dutch as soon as possible.
My other suggestion is to look into a portable skill such as programming. If you have any skill at all with programming I would actually put a higher priority on learning that over Dutch. There are a lot of really good jobs for programmers.
One other route to consider that can be pleasing and humbling if you had a good career is making something with your hands.
Try furniture, food, beverages, desserts. If you make something well then rent a booth at a craft fair and try to sell it. I know its difficult to process if you had a stable career in the states but sometimes serendipity will lead you places you didn't expect.
