Not only would you now probably need a definite or greater down payment, but the amount you may borrow would have changed. So unless a bank has told you how much loan you qualify for, I strongly advise you go talk to your bank first. And if you currently have an interest only loan (which many expats do), you are in for a shock. About a month ago it was announced that German banks are offering highly favourable terms to buyers on the Dutch market which may be worth your while i.e. 125% loans @ around 2,5% fixed for 10 years.  less

After all, they invented modern trading a couple of hundred years ago. Anyway, they seem to live by the credo that if you don't buy it, someone else will. Ever noticed when a real Dutch-owned business closes down, the shop stays open for ages after it actually closed so that they can try and flog off old plastic hangers and a busted vacuum cleaner. Well, it is this mentality that exists in almost every Dutch business, including food. So yes, limp fish that should be binned will go into the batter. Eat up. It is also for this reason that we chose to become vegetarian at the height of the horse meat debacle, which clearly had its origins in Holland. And only now is the Dutch government trying to do something about it. My point exactly, we eat horse so what's the problem?  less

    Hi Shridhar,
There is a Bink after school facility (Dutch speaking) at the upper international school in Rembrantlaan which is attended by Dutch and English speaking kids. Kids are taken after school from their class by one of the Bink members to the facility and you collect them there afterwards. Speak to your child's teacher about it.

Then there are bank accounts to be set up, medical insurance to be applied for. Registering at the local council, being interviewed by a potential landlord etc and of course paying double rent in SA and NL. Importantly, by arriving here together means that your (visas/verblijfvergunningen) will run concurrently. If you do it separely you would have to go through the schlep twice. MOST importantly ensure that your SA passports have the same expiry date with at least a 5 year window. Orientating yourselves: Everything about Holland is different to what you are used to. And your husbands Afrikaans won't really help him cos the Dutch frown upon people who don't speak their taal (correctly) and then they simply switch to English anyway. Though he should find it easy reading Dutch and filling out firms. Immerse yourself in as much of th...    less

    Hi Karen,
Congrats on your imminent move. If you've looked at cost-of-living comparisons before (http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_cities), you are probably aware that you'd need at least 40% more in A'dam (or anywhere in North Holland or Utrecht provinces) to maintain a similar lifestyle, even if you don't intend on getting a car. Wherever you are currently living, it will be VERY different from wherever you choose to live here. Accommodation is expensive. Health insurance in mandatory. Utilities are paid at a fixed monthly rate and council taxes are paid annually. Other than restaurants, shops in most areas open at 10am and shut at 6pm. Supermarket hours are generally 8 - 8/9 with some variations. Most are closed on Sundays though certain supermarkets open from 4 - 8. Most towns observe Koopavond whereby most shops are open on a given night till 9pm (mainly Thursdays but in some instances, Fridays). All shops except supermarkets only open after 12 on Mondays. Supermarkets also have different trading...    less

Anyhow, I dunno if (the Dutch) are REALLY racist or simply selectively dislike certain class groups and even that seems to be waining. The Dutch openly embrace their (own) from places such as Aruba and The Antilles yet there clearly seems to be animosity between themselves (mainly older people), Turks and Moroccans; mainly men towards men. I have witnessed this in most public places, mainly on trains and buses. Whilst young(er) native Dutch women really seem to get on we'll with all these groups, especially those from their own neighbourhoods or schools. My point is, I believe classism is more prevalent here than racism.  less

I have found a certain generation of Duchies to always be on the defensive which makes it unpleasant trying to engage them in conversation, unless you want a debate of course. Anyway, I found the description below on another expat website describing the Dutch. Ironically it s by a Duchy who's lived overseas for many years:
It is like living in an anarchistic state. The rudeness comes from an increasing adversarial view of one's fellow man here and the accompanying growth in dishonesty. Hypocriosy is main stream here. Just look for example preachy Dutchmen are towards others, real know it alls. It is a defence mechanism grown from knowing how mediocre one's own society is, with poor health care, 'doll house size homes', cheapness abounding in its products and services (I do not mind frugality at all, but just providing a lot of J...    less

The single most coolest thing for me about M&S being here is having access once again to real tasty dairy products. I am so done with Goudse Kaas, Gras Boter and tasteless milk. Even the locally produced Organic products are so bland in comparison to M&S's. And I love how M&S don't make a song and dance about their quality; they simply just do it. No wonder they are Britains most trusted brand.

But somehow I think it will be ongoing for some time. If you are going to the opening, enjoy. Somehow I think there will be more media, staff and (competitors) than customers. Lets face it, M&S have kept this under wraps (for maybe too long). Anyway, more about why (I believe) this is going to have a major impact on Dutch retailing, later.

So, after Kalverstraat, M&S will open a flagship store on Rokin, followed by Den Haag and various other addresses in the near future including forecourt food stores in conjunction with BP. I bet the food technologists at Albert Heijn and Hema are ready and waiting (simply because that is where the Dutch are trailing far behind and no one has had an idea how to fix it). Hema has implemented major store/identity upgrades and are trying to improve their overall customer experience but sadly, they have a long, long way to go. Not only will M&S's launch here improve the Dutch's eating habits it most certainly will influence the way customers are treated whilst creating more jobs as other retailers TRY and mimic the M&S experience. Oh dear.  less

Apart from the fact that you need to commute to D'dorf and thus the expense thereof, I found the staff to be arrogant and unhelpful. Biometrics in A'dam is done by a 3rd party and there is no difference who/where it is done. I would use A'dam again. On the three occasions the longest it took was 14 days.

I remember back on 2010 when this was first announced the local food markets were up in arms. From photos that of seen the emphasis is on a food theatre. But has anyone been and do they really have a much wider product selection than the standard Dutch store?

Single people and those who enjoy being social 24/7 are attracted to Amsterdam. Not only is accommodation at a premium (as has been mentioned) popular inner-city areas are pretty over-crowded and becoming more so. Apartments sizes start at around 30 sq/m and that's all you'd have during the dreary winter months. And forget about having a car as parking is impossible unless you consider the outskirts and even there councils are turning everything into paid parking spaces. The cost of food has stabilised and seems a lot more affordable than when we arrived here 6 years ago. And the choices have also improved somewhat but if you only have a single average salary, it needs to go far. Apart from rental, you would have various council and water taxes, car tax, mandatory health insurance, utility bills (gas, electricity and water). So whilst you can make ends meet on the salary you mentioned, you would have nothing left to enjoy the cool location. Accommodation in neighbouring towns is easier to find and coup...    less
