We imported our RHD car into NL 4 years ago. Had absolutely no problems, was a very straightforward process.
To avoid BPM you have to have owned it for 6 months prior to import and re-register the car within a year of being here; ours was secondhand and we had paid the VAT on it already so didn't have to pay it again when we got here.
The Douane do check your paperwork when you go to re-register the car... paperwork such as your Gemente documents, UK car documents and the like.
We brought ours over from the UK, drove it around on UK plates for a while (about 6 months.. very naughty) and then started the import process. The Douane weren't interested in when the car arrived here, just when we bought it and when we arrived here.
And to answer your question regarding no claims bonus... we had to scratch ours and start again but you could try FBTO.nl as they seem to be pretty on the ball.
