I've lived in VA and in NY, and traveled to many places in the US....CO is definately near the top of the list of places to live. Wide-open spaces, mountains, prairies, great quality of life, low humidity, sunny winters. (I could go on!). Where in the state you live will see some variety in the above topics. Some places like Boulder, Denver are a touch more expensive and may have more traffic than others, but still very low in comparison to other places, particularly on the Coasts. On recent trip over, went to 1 car dealership. Hoped to make it to Delft to see Hyundai dealer to check offerings, prices, etc.. Shipping a car from here to there is amazingly inexpensive. Hyundai for example are offerring great summer deals on some models, and one would thing a Hyundai (or in your case ford) is a Hyundai and service would be no problem. As your expericence showed, that is not necessarily a good assumption.
I would have thought that the gasoline V6 Ford motor in the 'stang was also used in other Ford's globally (if you have the V8 then I'd bet that is probably a US only option). Other makes from GM, Hyundai, etc. probably are more global than other. I like some Peugeots but bringing one back here could be...    less

Start digging around the US and NL immigration sites for information, forms and FOLLOW the processes. They are there for a reason and on the US side there is an 1-800 number you can call with your questions.
You might want to look on both sides of the ocean at Univerisity options. Here, used to be that foreign students could get scholarships, etc. to add diversity to the university. Maybe it works on the NL side too for a Yank?  less

I'm no expert yet. Have only just returned from some house hunting myself. According to the agents that I talked to, I think the answer on whether you have to pay the agency fee 'depends'. If you didn't have an agent, and the rentor does, I think you're stuck. If you have an agent, and they do too, then the fee seems to be 'worked out'.
As for taxes. It is my understanding that it has to be a legal/registered rental so it can be your address, the landlords mortgage company knows it's a rental and then any income from the property can be taxed.....
Me, I would lean towards doing things above board. The rental/landlord relationship may likely weigh on the colleague relationshipship, kind of like 'don't lend money to a friend'.....  less

Relo to Den Haag...estimate cost for a car?
Struggling to work up a budget for relocating to Den Haag for work.

Obvious need will be trasportation.  Looking for rough costs on sensibly sized car?  For a 3 year stint, leasing makes most sense vs purchasing but have not been able to find much about that online from US.  Car would be VAT free if that matters.

SO:  For those in country already...what is the typical/average cost for a 4-door (4-passenger) car like a Peugeot, Ford, VW or similar?  Manual tranmission is fine.

Similarly, an average figure or range for insurance costs would be very helpful too!

An alternative option could be to ship over similar car from US but don't have any idea of the costs on shipping yet, ideas?  A ~$20,000 car here equates to a 15,000 euro car there, but is something like a hyundai veloster even in the 15k euro range?

    Thanks!

Thanks for the replies you guys. Definately more to think about.
The location vs price/features will require some extensive exploring when I am there. I am hopeful that options exist on the periphery of Den Haag or Wassenaar or similar would reflect in the price?
That was one topic I hoped to get some leads on through the forum. Seems to be several property options between north/west of the Den Haag proper that are a little larger and touch more affordable. Not in city-center but nearer beach and transportation. [Just hard to tell which are nicer or lessor neighborhoods].
    # of bathrooms seems to need to be re-worded to # of toilets, as it sounds like what is more common would be refered to here as '1.5. baths. Definately need atleast 2 loos! :0)...  more

On the general 'things are smaller' side, we've already started looking at furniture here with that kind of eye. What do we really want/need to ship, what is just too big or too American, and what would we want to buy on local economy at Ikea! yeah!

    3)allows pets
    4)3 beds/2 baths/nice kitchen
    5) reasonable commute (will to trade living accomodations for proximity)
    6) parking (garage ideal but seeming harder to come by).
    7) unfurnished

Trying to narrow down the list of near by villiages as living 'in' the Hague looks like mostly apartment options.

Have had a suggestion for Wessenaar?

Initially just looking for area/neighborhood/villiage suggestions to help narrow down the search.  Living in a cluster of expats isn't a criteria.  Would love a country type house but they may all likely be too far away.

    Cheers!  less

expat01: THANK YOU for both posting your initial question and following up on how it worked out. This is a relevant question as we are currently still stateside, possibly becoming expats in 2012 (well, technically my wife is currently a british expat in the US already - but I digress). All that aside I can't help thinking that regardless of the make/model, something like an oil change should be pretty straight forward assuming that an oil filter that would fit was available. (note: look for metric cars, vs SAE models) :-) Just again, sharing experiences is how we all learn along the way...so THANKS!
