Since becoming a member of this forums here I have noticed a lot of Dutch bashing. People seem to enjoy using this space to vent their frustrations of every little thing they are unhappy about in the Netherlands.
If my fiance and I had read these forums before we moved to Amsterdam we may have reconsidered coming here and that would have been a very very big mistake. In fact we are now actively avoiding most the negative advice given in these forums and finding out that things are great regardless of what some negative people in the forums here say.
Since moving to The Netherlands we have found the Dutch to be nothing but pleasant and easy going.
Sure, if you're coming from a country where the culture differences are huge it may take more time to adjust. However branding every Dutch national as rude and arrogant because of the actions of a couple people is like branding everyone American as a two gun holding hick.
Maybe people want to hear some positive experiences? I have plenty of these! But for me what makes The Netherlands such a great country to live in is how free everyone is allowed to be, how gezellig everyone actually is. It's not being rushed out of a restaurant or cafe, It's being able to chat with the cafe staff like they're your friends, It's watching how people love meeting up with their friends over a beer. How tolerant people actually are, how they let everyone else be and not try to judge or govern what they do, how they trust one another or an outsider. How happy they are when you try to speak Dutch or when you're keen to try Dutch food!
What are some of your positive experiences?
