I just posted that I was looking for a place to live with my budget and two very nice girls contacted me back. I'm in Den Haag at the moment, registering and settling in. I hope to find work soon though, but from asking around, it seems to be possible to find work in places. I'll keep this updated. I recently learned this is new and was implemented in February 2012. The landlord dropped off a copy of his I.D. but the ownership paper doesnt look official to me. I think he just typed an explanation of the ownership, but I'm not sure because it's in Dutch. As it's the only paperwork he gave me and my appointment is in one day, should I just bring it with me anyway and hope for the best? Can anyone give me a better idea of what the ownership paper looks like?  less

I'm hoping to register as a resident, open a bank account, apply for financial aid and other miscellaneous paperwork in a week. Is this a reasonable time line or should I plan on staying longer? My only concern is I can't stay too much longer because of time constraints with work, so I am hoping one week would be enough time.

Guess what? Student looking for a place to live! Yaaaay!!
Hi all! I plan on moving to Den Haag beginning of July, and I am starting my search for a room rental or somebody looking to start a group to rent an entire apartment.

I am a 26 year old German/American, non-smoking female (I prefer non-smoking roommates, but it's not a deal breaker). I will be attending KABK starting last week of August. I would love to share an apartment with a fellow KABK student only because the apartment might be closer to the school, but again, not a deal breaker. I don't care what race/gender/sexual orientation you are, just as long as you are tidy, considerate, respectful of privacy, friendly, and won't mind if my astrophysicist boyfriend comes to visit once a month. My dream roommates are people that I will chat and laugh with until the wee hours of the morning, so chemistry is a definite plus.

The maximum amount of rent I can pay is €300. I honestly don't care how big the room is, as long as I can fit a proper bed and a desk, maybe even a bookshelf. Of course, ...    less

    Hi Osita,
    Super useful information, thank you!
I'm a dual citizenship holder with the U.S. and Germany. I've been living in Europe for nearly 3 years. I do qualify for the grants, financial aid, etc because of my citizenship. But from what I've seen, it just applies to school costs, not living. I could be wrong though, and maybe they do cover living costs as well, I just have not seen any concrete evidence as to that.
I have bookmarked the website you recommend and will definitely be looking through it. I thought of Starbucks first because I saw it when I visited Den Haag about a month ago. Since I have experience working in a cafe, I hoped it might be easier to find work in another....  more

I definitely need the 8 hrs a week to get the stipend and also so I can have the student abonnement.
I have German public health insurance, and I read through my school's website that I can ask them to change it to international (or only through Europe) so I can be covered. This was a huge relief to me because I lived in the U.S...    less

To Ariannie, from what I've found in room rentals targeted to students, whether through DUWO or privately owned, I haven't been asked for proof of employment, just proof that I will be a student. I think there are student stipends or a subsidy (could be wrong) to help with rent. But if I can find a cheap enough room where I can *maybe* save enough money to pre-pay several months, then I won't be as worried. It's only the strange desire to eat maybe 2-3x a day that worries me most. Although I do need to lose some weight, so maybe being a broke student will come with the perk of a smaller waistline? Thanks for the link to the Facebook page, I will definitely attempt to contact them. Same to you fortuner for the Amsterdam contact numbers. I will be calling them shortly!  less

Having Slight Anxiety Attack - How To Live in NL As A Student??
Please bear with me as I am having minor anxiety attacks writing this.

I was accepted as a student at KABK in Den Haag, and I will be moving from Munich, Germany in about 4.5 months. The school does not have student housing, so I have an acount with DUWO to help with that. I'm slightly worried about housing, but even more so about how to make a bit of money so I'm not homeless and licking the insides of trash cans for sustenance.
I thought I could easily find a part-time job working in a cafe, as I have almost one year experience working in one in Munich. I even read there is a student subsidy where after working for 3 months, at 32 hours/month, I can recieve a small student grant of €250, plus a little bit more if I can prove need. I had planned on applying to Starbucks and asking if they would hire me just to make coffee and bus tables which requires little to no contact with customers, considering this would only be maybe once a week, I think it's pretty reasonable. I do plan on learning Dutch, bu...  ...  more
