I have several questions - so if you're not in the mood for a long read, look away!
I am planning on moving to Switzerland in June 2014, I have always wanted to live in Europe and had yet to find the country which motivated me enough to go through the process... I have found it in Switzerland! I am very serious about moving there as soon as possible, but I know the process can be daunting.
I am a 27 year old Project Manager with an honours degree in political science. I also have a PMP (Project Management Professional) designation. I would be moving there with a 26 year old Project Manager with a degree in law and a certificate in environmental management. In my research finding a job in Switzerland as a non-EU member is difficult so I am hoping to find some more clarity here. My questions are as follows:
1) We would want to move there permanently but would take the best route in which to gain a work permit. Canada has an agreement with Switzerland for Young Professionals which grants them up to 18 months working in Switzerland. My question is, does anyone know if once in Switzerland you can upgrade to the C Permit - or will it not apply under the Young Professionals agreement? My fear would be taking the easiest route to relocate to Switzerland and it not be possible to change it to a more permanent residency.
2) I am currently fluent in French, would it also be advisable to learn German? I know different regions are more prone to speaking certain languages but I would like to make myself as marketable as possible. Would you recommend German or Swiss-German? There are conflicting reports...
3) City - I have been to a few cities in Switzerland and loved them all (Zurich especially) - which city or even Canton would you recommend for two young professionals to gain employment most rapidly? We work in the IT and Environment Consulting fields.
4) What can I expect to pay for a nice, clean and 2-3 bedroom apartment/townhouse in either Zurich or your recommended location? I know it is much more expensive to live out there, but am also finding conflicting reports on the subject.
Thanks to anyone who read through this in its entirety - I am very grateful if you have ANY answers to any of my questions, or just general advice. I'll take it all!
Thanks,
Kristin
