Working Holiday Visa

Hello,

I'm a Canadian thinking of applying for a working holiday visa for the Netherlands. Has anyone here applied for one? If so, was it difficult to obtain and can you provide any tips?

What company did you use for the required travel insurance?

My son did. Very easy. Just make sure you can prove you have enough money in your bank account for at least a ticket home. Then show up here and make an appointment at the IND; they fill out the forms for you. Don't worry about applying for anything in Canada...they haven't a clue really.

Can't remember what travel insurance he used...something recommended on the Lonely Planet website, I seem to remember...I can get back to you on that...

BTW...can you speak French? Your opportunties grow exponentially if you do...My son doesn't have a degree yet, but his French helped him get two jobs while he was here, one at Fossil Watches on the main shopping street in Amsterdam, which was a real surprise...But they wanted someone to talk to the French tourists as well as their suppliers in France...

Canucky Woman is right. I came here with the WHV and I just applied at the IND (make an appointment on arrival). You might have to go outside Amsterdam to get a faster appointment (Amsterdam was a two or three week wait for me so I went to Zwolle).

I had no clue before I arrived, so I also applied for a schengen visa which wasn't needed. You can just rock up and go into the IND to get it. I think it cost about €20 or 30 and you're eligible to find work that same day. You will, however need a BSN to get paid, but you can apply at the city council the same time you register where you're living. Once that number comes through you can get paid. I think you can also apply for the number online, but don't know the site, sorry!

You'll also need your birth certificate apostilled for your registration at the city council.

I used travel insurance with World Nomads. Reasonably priced and acceptable. You can just buy it online.

I actually had like the same question, I live in Holland but my boyfriend is Canadian and wants to come a year to Holland with the WHV.

- Can he apply for that when he is coming in Holland or does he has to do it now while is still is in Canada?

- Does anybody has information about an insurance / an cheap insurance?

Thanks for all your advice.

I've gotten my MVV here in Canada for the WHV. It was fairly quick. The longest process was waiting for my legalized long form birth certificate after I sent it out to Ottawa. That took about 7 weeks to come back in the mail.

I used www.insuremytrip.com to buy my insurance cause you can cancel it if you need to before you leave. It cost me less than $500 for one year of insurance.

You didn't need an MVV. You're not from a country that requires one. I hope you didn't waste too much money. You only needed to fly here and apply direct at the IND.

Thanks, it didn't cost me anything to get the MVV. Do you know if you need a permanent address in the Netherlands before you can register with your municipality and apply for a residence permit with the IND?

I won't have a permanent place to live when I get there and it says online that I should make an appointment with the IND no later than eight days after I arrive.

Also, does anyone know any good roommate finder or housing sites for the Netherlands?

My son got a visa too...I think it gives the embassy employees something to do more than anything else.

I can't help with residency, sorry. My son moved directlly in with us, so that was a non-issue for him.

Yes, you have to have a "permanent" address in NL before you can register with the gemeente. Proof of address is required - normally in the form of your rental contract and/or a letter from the owner stating that you are a resident at that address.

Quick question is there anyway to extend a WHV in the Netherlands? In Canada and Australia and several other you can work to get a 2nd year extension. Does such a thing exist in NL?
