Visiting UK --EEA family permit or visitor's visa?

Hello All,

I wish to visit my sister who lives in Londen and I am slightly confused on wihch visa I have to apply for. My husband and my son are Dutch citizens and I am an Indian citizen therefore I understand that I need a visa to enter UK.

My doubts are

Can I apply for a EEA family permit even if my husband works in the netherlands?

If I opt for a EEA family permit visa can i travel alone to the UK along with my son for a week?

How long does it take to get the EEA family permit visa?

Do i have to go to the embassy in Dusseldorf for my visa or is there one in netherlands now?

Which one is better, Applying for a Visitor's visa or a EEA family permit visa.

Kindly throw some light on the above issues.

you can not apply for EEA family permit as ur husband is not working in UK.

you can apply six months visitor visa for UK free of cost, as u r wife of dutch national. you have to apply by post to British embassy Germany or go by self . All up to you

I also have a dutch partner (we are not married though) and i require a visa to the go to the UK. The procedure no different than applying as you would in your home country. You go online and fill out a form online and submit it online. You need to show proof of income as well as reason for visit, invitation letter, person you are going to visit address (if applicable) applicable, intended travel date etc.. The documents you need to provide are on the UK border agency website. You also need to make an appointment to submit a print out of the form, passport photograph and supporting documentation. The UK Consulate in the Netherlands has been closed therefore you will need to go to the UK Consular office in Dusseldorf, germany. You will submit the documents as well as your passport for processing. They will call you days later when it is ready for pick up. You can either go back to germany to pick it up or you can pay for a courier to pick it up and send it to you when you go to make an appointment to submit it in the first place.

Alternatively,since the purpose of going to germany is to give you biometric data,there is also a biometric clinic here in NL.The clinic in Amsterdam opened on 15 August 2011 at the Regus Business Centre, Amsterdam Atrium, Strawinskylaan 3051, with a service fee of €147.56 or so excluding your visa fees (it is not free) You will be supplied with a pre-addressed envelope to post your application and documents to the UK Border Agency offices in Croyden for consideration. Passports and any supporting documents will be returned directly to the applicants by courier once a decision on whether to grant a visa has been made.

It is pretty straight forward but all this cost money. I paid for the visa and then for the biometric clinic. I also had to send them a copy of my tax return (which i had to translate from Dutch by a translator). I also had to send them my resident card as well. I called there helpline to confirm this because i felt it was ridiculous to send both my passport and permit to them but they assured me that they need all originals (and copies). I sent it all.

Hi Duniya,

Thank you very much for your detailed reply. I would like know why you had translated your tax returns to English? Is it some kind of requirement? Our salary slips are also in dutch ,Do we have to get them translated too?

If our friend/Family living in Uk just give us an invitaion letter,their immigration status and address proof will that be sufficient from their side if we are sponsoring our trip?

That is tha page that lists documents you can send to support your family visa application. The reason is they want to see that you have a reason to return to your country afterwards (family, job, etc) and won't overstay to become an illegal worker there.

Google 'UK border agency' for more information about the visas.
