I just wanted to throw this out there for those of you who are going to have to go through the exams in the new year.
As it stands right this moment (in other words, it could change), the government is throwing out the portfolio/oral exam and will be introducing the new exam as of January 1st 2013. If this really does go through, for the first several months students will get to choose to do the portfolio OR the new exam.
So if you're starting classes now and will test after January 1st, make sure to ask your school what they're doing in preperation for the new exam and when they're going to stop preparing students for the portfolio!
By searching on the internet, I found the following information on the new "inburgering examen" as from 2013:
The new exams include a reading and a listening test, both will be worked on computer); and a writing test on paper (the old-fashioned way). All these 3 tests takes 2 hours.
The "praktijk" part (started since 2007) which contains portfolio and a verbal exam will be abolished.
The "Kennis van de Nederlandse Samenleving" (KNS) and "Toets Gesproken Nederlands" (TGN) remain unchanged.
Candidates can take all parts of the whole exam within one day. From 1 January 2013 people can choose which style (the old or the new) of exam to take. According to the website of "Rijksoverheid", the old style will last up to 1 September 2014.
