Honestly, I lived in five different european countries, also from the South of europe, and I have never seen anything so bad. From going to the hospital for an accident and having to limp around to steal some alcohol because they wouldn't clean my wounds, had a horrifying rash for six months because doctors would prescribe medicines without any tests, had to put up a fight to get very necessary blood tests done, never had any kind of check up (you know, blood pressure or checking your lungs) from the GP, there is much more but I will spare you. Usually I imagine that I am in the middle of African savannah, and I stock on all kinds of medicines from my home country, once that I really needed some tests done urgently I went to first aid in Antwerpen! across the frontier, for something less urgent I take a plane. I agree, I have no idea how the natives survive, they must be very robust, still I don't see a lot of old people around.
On the other hand, I found some really top notch dentists, if you are looking for one I can referr you
