The only thing that has been annoying is the insurance - it's not cheap, and the rules of maritime insurance (at least from this company) are extremely (I would say unreasonably) restrictive; for example, you have to insure EVERY LAST THING, individually, or it's not covered, no matter how much the total of your insurance. For example, if you say you have 15 shirts, and you actually have 17, and something happens to them...only 15 are covered. I'll let you know more when things come to a close.  less

    Need Advice re: Area
So, I've been in Amsterdam for a week, and have had absolutely zero luck in finding an apartment - it has been much harder than I imagined, and I'd like to get ANY advice from ANYONE who has first-hand knowledge regarding ANY of my queries.

In short, my hopes of being near the center are probably not going to be realized, as my budget is only 1200 euro (excl.) max.  Not only that, but every apartment for which I've "applied" seems to have had about 10-20 people ahead of me.  As such, I think I have to give up on living in biking distance from the center (where I'll be working), and focus on those areas that seem to have more apartments, at marginally lower prices.

So, if anyone has any ideas of where, specifically, to look for short-term rentals - or, if anyone HAS a short-term rental - please let me know!  I'm single, professional, VERY quiet (and need something very quiet), financially stable, and mature.  No pets, no smoking, no parties.  Sounds dull, doesn't it?

I will be working in the centrum, so would like something within a half-hour commuting distance.  Biking distance would be grand, but I know that's probably not likely.  I'm from a big city, so I'm used to urban life - but prefer something safe (not too shady).

So an average-sized box (19X13X13) filled with books, records, or CDs (about 30 pounds) would cost approximately $115.00. If you've got more than 20 boxes of this size/weight (or if you've got larger, heavier boxes), it probably won't be very cost-effective - and this price doesn't include any insurance. Seems that there's no way around it - shipping things to Europe from the US is just expensive.  less

I went on the USPS site, and for the average book-sized box (the size you get from U-Haul), filled with books (meaning heavy) I got much higher prices. I seem to recall that in the past few years the USPS discontinued the service you may have used - they no longer offer that slow, slow by-ship shipping, so that anything sent has to be air freight (with a correspondingly higher price). Maybe I should call them to confirm this.

newbie, if I do find out that it truly is only $30-50.00/box to ship with USPS, I may have to reconsider my move. However, as of now, I have chosen a mover - Rainier Overseas. I've read lots of good reviews about them on MovingScam.com, and thus far they have been very responsive, and totally on top of things. They were definitely not the cheapest, but they were not outrageously above any of the other vendors either - and to be honest, the other vendors whom I contacted were not at all on top of things...    less

I haven't seen anything even remotely decent - and in a decent neighborhood - for less than 1300-1400 Euro.

Ostia, the rooftrack link is fantastic. I guess I don't completely understand the Dutch housing market, because I was surprised to see so many listings far below any prices I'd encountered on funda.nl. Is there a reason for this? Are the listings on funda.nl not "free sector"?  Also - how difficult is it to get OUT of a Dutch lease; that is, if I sign for a year, and then decide to buy in six months' time, would I be able to get out of the rental agreement?

It's scary to feel that the move is just around the corner, and yet I haven't found a place - but I suppose it's more comforting to know that I haven't waited to long, and that I should in fact, in your opinion, even wait a bit longer. I don't know why, but some of my Dutch acquaintances have reacted quite negatively to Amsterdam Noord. Clearly one's perceptions are highly subjective - another reason why it pays to wait until one's feet are on the ground before committing to a purchase.

Ultimately, I think I'd like to buy, because rental prices for expats seem absolutely insane (and I'm coming from one of the most expensive metro areas in the US).  But it seems foolish to jump right into buying something when I have no real feel for the city, neighborhoods, transportation, etc. - so I think I should probably rent for at least a few months.

I think tomorrow (or soon thereafter) I should plan on taking a day to find/speak with several different companies (both types), get some estimates, and take it from there. I have a very small shipping budget from my new employer, so if that would pay for a chunk of a container (or half container), it might be worth it to ship a bit more, rather than throwing things away and buying again.
