May seem wierd to reply on such an old thread, but this one comes top of the google search results when you look for the 'best hairdresser in Amsterdam' so people are clearly still looking here for guidance!
I've been in Amsterdam for 6 months, and based on this thread I went to Leo to get my hair cut. He was great - funny, friendly and most importantly he gave me the exact cut I wanted, in fact it was even better than I had hoped for. That man knows 1001 ways to cut a bob.
Anyway, I went back a few times and finally began to get a bit miffed with some aspects of the service. Leo packs in his customers and you can easily find yourself parked with wet hair waiting for him to get to you for your cut. I'm an impatient type and I wanted my appointment to start at the allocated time, and end an hour or so later. No chance with Leo! You never really knew when your appointment would start or end. So anyway, I thought I would go to some other salons. Leo was great, surely all the fuss about Amsterdam hairdressers not meeting UK standards was a myth? Surely I could find someone with his skills who was a tad more organised?
Oh no. Oh dearie me no. I tried Het Haartheater (up for a Time Out award no less) and the service was impeccible....while they seriously wrecked my hair with razor blades and a lopsided and uneven cut. I tried the Toni & Guy in Magna Plaza. Wow. Even now I fail to understand how my instructions managed to translate into the horrible haircut I recieved.
So you know what? I went back to Leo. And he fixed my hair, in fact he made it look awesome. And maybe I'm a lot more chilled out now after 6 months in this amazing city, but I didnt really care that I was sat around for a while waiting for my slot. I drank my coffee, enjoyed my scalp massage (seriously, none of the other hairdressers I tried did this, at Leos you get your hair washed and scalp massaged while lying on a bed!) and listened to the mad banter between Leo and his team. It was great.
In conclusion - yes, Leo is a great hairdresser and a really lovely guy. The salon may be organisationally challenged, but Ive learned thats a small price to pay. Just dont go in with any expectation of the time at which you will come out.
Hope that helps :O)
