Now, the HARD part is that to Register, you must have a Rental contract in hand and finding a place to Rent .. is difficult ... to out it mildly - unless you have a generous budget.
So you need to find a place to live immediately if not sooner ... (that can be a hotel because hotels automatically register you without your knowing it).
    That is the catch.
As a KM worker you have to rent legally or you will be found out almost immediatelyt, then you will lose your money and have to move within 2 weeks.
So when you find a place .. the golden question you must ask the landlord is 'Can I use this address to be Registered at the Gemeente?'

I am single and I have lived here almost 7 years and I find plenty to do here - Salsa dancing, Jazz, Art galleries, Theatre, Movies, dining, pubhopping. outdoor concerts etc

The only people that complain are the people that cannot afford to go out anywhere because as in most cities - you have to pay for your drinks, your dinner etc.. So in that case - wherever they live - they will be unhappy. :)

I would not recommend that you commute to AMS from Den Haag. That's gonna get old. If your job based in Den Haag - live in Den Haag.

However, if you like AMS ... and want to live there ... then do so and commute. AMS is a lot of fun of course, and does have more to offer in terms of fun than Den Haag or anywhere else in he country.

    Well, I am not surprised.

They have been knocking this concept around FOR YEARS now.

When I moved here in 2000, everyone could have dual nationality. Then about 2 years later more or less they said NO, you could only have one or the other (outrage!), so then they pushed it back such that if you were married to a Dutch citizen, you have both passports.

If you were not married - you could only get a Dutch and EU permanent residence permit - which is what I have now.

Okay, so now they are back with the notion of blocking dual citizenship for everybody all over again.

    Oh well.

I think if this goes through:

    1) I think they will ask you to relinquish your home passport BEFORE they hand you a Dutch passport and

    2) You definitely will not get your (already spent) 800 euros back.

The new company was so fixated on the 30% rule papers etc that they did not apply for my Working Permit  at all!. It wasn't until I brought this their attention .. that they realized their mistake and had to scramble to put the papers through. 1. "When you are granted the 30% it takes a few months to clear and POW .. one day you have this much bigger paycheck. No letter -no nothing." Since the application for the 30% ruling is an official request the tax authorities have to provide a decision on paper. If the ruling is granted you will get a declaration whichs shows for which period the ruling is granted and for which employer. This declaration is sent to the person who actually filed the request. Normally this is the HR department, you can ask them a copy of the declaration.

I have been burned by US movers too. :( I contacted IBM and asked who they used as their Movers for their International moves. ( I used to work for them so I know they are not going to use these fly by night movers.) They ship from The States vis 'Containers' which usually hold quite a bit of furniture etc. This is waht I used ... only the thing I shipped did not even fill a half of a Container so they merged my move in with some strangers. This mover should come to your house and do an assessment of what it will take to pack and ship your stuff. They will insure it because they wil pack it up and send it to Rotterdam where they will interface with a local Dutch movers who will contact you, discuss customs etc and ship it to you house here in The NL. Sounds like you only have a few things. In your case .. I would not use movers all. I would box up your books, tapes etc and ship them. For clothes just packed up 2 or 3 suitcases and come on over.

    seeseaismeNL said:

My son was granted a RP under the DAFT agreement.  His renewal was denied.  He proved that he made more than the minimum income for the year but apparently what he sent as proof was not sufficient.  They told him to leave the country in 28 days.  I don't understand why he was granted the original RP and after earning enough money and owing taxes to NL they would actually tell him to leave!

I want to start a conversation for others. Has anyone else experienced this situation and what did you do?

How long does the appeal process take?

I am not here on the DAFT but I know the IND has tight rules for residency .. in general.

The fact that he was granted the DAFT the first time - paid taxes .. but was not granted it the second time ... does not mean anything.

(You must be American because I am American and we are always thinking that as long as you remain legal and 'pay your taxes' that X goverenment owes you something. Hee hee! Nooo that does not mean anything in The NL. Wrong expectation.)

I moved here in 2000 and back then I had to have my Residence Permit renewed every year until I was able to gain permanent residency in 5 years. And if at any time I did not fulfiill the residency requirements, they could have denied my Residence Permit renewal and I would have been asked to leave as well. That is the system.

That's why it behoeves your son to know exactly what he needed to provide in order to renewal his residency and then ... provide it.

I am sure your son can appeal the decision by hiring a lawyer - but such a situation is quite time-sensitive so I would have your son hire an Immigration lawyer .. immediately .. if not sooner.

This will buy him some time .. because while he is in the appeals process - they cannot ask him to leave the country.

    So sorry...

I have the Permana nt residence permit .. and you don´t have to remain employed to keep this permit once it has been granted. So it does not matter if you quit your job or you get fired. You can just live off your savings if you want .. because it doesn´t matter.

     HI to everyone,

I have experience in Oil & gas design, have exp of 9 years as Process Engineer. My age is 30 years.
I have been offered 4500 Euros after tax salary by a consultant "Progressviege". They have said that I need to pay approximately 1000- 1200 euros for myself and same additional cost for my wife to apply for work permit. I need to pay approximately 750 each upfront but the rest payment will be deducted from salary when I start to work. Is it normal in Netherlands ?

Umm I have never heard of an employee that had to pay for their own Work Permit. I certainly did not pay for mine. I assume you are getting a KM permit ... and I kinow that people sometimes pay for the renewal of this permit after 5 years here .. pbut that's all.

I understand that 4500 Euros is paid after the end of 4 weeks. So per month its around 4800 Euros. The placement is in Jacobs Engineering which is one of the best in the world in Oil & gas design. I am confused loooking at different sites, therefore need feedback for the following queries:

    1. Jacobs is located in Hoogvliet, Leiden and Meerseen as well, Can you provide rent for good single bedroom flat and two bedroom flat as well.I guess two bedroom is around 900- 1250 Euros excluiding utility bills. Please confirm my understanding.

I don't know exactly but in general .. 900 is low. I would say for 2 bedroome you would need about 1200. Look at www.funda.nl - enter the city and see.

    2. Whether 450 Euros is enough for insurace for a family of 2 Adults and two kids (One kid is about 3 years and other is 10 months age)?

I think that would be plenty - but this comes out of your paychck so you get a group rate - which is cheaper.

    3. Query is regarding schooling . My elder kid requires to be sent to English school. How much expenses I need to consider for his schooling fees? American International school is very expensive charging more than 1000 Euros per month.Whether there are reasonable English schools in Hoogvliet, Leiden and Meerseen towns/ areas?

Umm the only International schools I know are in Amserdam, Den Haag, Arnhem and I think Eindhoven. Leiden is between Den Haag and Amsterdam.

    4. How much could be the utility bills (for gas, electricity, water, internet, TV for indian channels, other taxes etc)? These bills are not a concern.

I wouldn't try to nickel and dime this - just budget overall about 300 a month as it all depends.

    5. Can I consider 1000 Euros for daily expenditure for a family of four (myself, wife, Son & daughter). How much could I save with salary of 4500 Euros.

4500 take home is a very generous salary here for Dutch people - but many Dutch people pay low rentals for Social housing for X number of years which allows them to save money to put a house with a big downpayment .. so then they have had low rent for a number if years and then they have a low mortgage.

As an expat you have to wait X amount of years to get this housing .. so you have to pay for the expensive rents right away.  I have not clue about the daily expenditure for a family of four. I don't budget that way.

    6. Whether my wife can get job there? Please note that she never had significant work experience but she has done MBS in HR & Marketing.

If you are here on a Work Permit or a KM permit then you will be sponsoring your whole family to live here. You have to fill out  the forms with the IND. The Residence permit for your wife will double as Working permit - so she can work.

The CATCH is .. unless she can speak fluent Dutch .., she will have a very hard time finding a job. You should take this very seriously as a lot of expat wives are unable to find work for the same reason - no Dutch

I will decide to take up the opportunity based on responses from the forum. Waiting for responses from all the members in this forum.

    Thanks and Regards,

We don't know everything .. so you shouldn't base your decision to move here on our responses. I am just telling you the general overall issues.

in the topic My job evaluation is negative, what's the reason behind it ? in the forum Employment in the Netherlands

I don't know why you keep saying ... 'who cares for a foreigner like me'?

I am a non Europoean foreigher too ... in fact I think most people here are non Euro foreigners on this board.

Yes, there are A hole in every team (and everyone knows who they are) but you can't make your managers dislike you. You kind of have to play it safe and NO ... going over their heads to talk to the Director will further compound your situation. Donb't do that!

I think you need to work your way back into their good graces and telling them that you don't like the direction the team is going in .. umm that will surely make it worse.

I say .. if you want to stay there .. you need to conform your thinking to their expectations and you need to get them to 'like' you.

If the salary is low AND the job is not doing you any favors in terms of advancing yourself - maybe just keep you head low and meanbwhile look for a another job.
