Maybe you can find out what the normal pay is first for that position given your education and experience.

for example, what if you're being paid 5 euro/hr and you feel you deserve 9 but most people with your background are making 6? then asking for 9 will definitely make you look greedy.    less

I wanted to e file my taxes, and I'm not really sure what to file under.  I'm an American who married a Dutch man back in May '12, but we lived in separate countries and on separate incomes.  I am in grad school and here on a study visa since October (just got the card in December, bsn in January).  The tax software is asking for my husband's ssn, which, of course, he does not have.  I thought I should file as 'married, filing separately.'  Is that correct?  And if so, how do I get around my hub's non-existent ssn?

    Thanks for your help!  less

    registered vs. registered marriage
    Hello!

I'm having a hard time finding non-conflicting answers. I married a Dutch man in America (I'm American) and came to NL a few months later on a tourist's visa with the intention of filing for a residency permit. I registered at the aliens police and went to the gemeente to register the marriage. I've read that after 5 days or so I should receive a bsn number, but I have not been sent anything. Did the act of registering my marriage also mean that I'm "registered"?

Also, I'm a bit intimidated about the IND appointment that we will have.  How does the process of appointment to residency card look? How long does it take?

in the topic Attempting to renegotiate large salary increase in the forum Employment in the Netherlands

I understand that you're wanting renegotiate your salary because you feel that you're being underpaid. But what if that is the normal pay rate for that job in the Netherlands? Then you're asking the company to pay you more than any other professional for the same work. Maybe you can find out what the normal pay is first for that position given your education and experience.

Hi all, hello from a new expat in Amsterdam! My husband and I moved for work from Atlanta, GA. I'm in finance (staffing industry) and he's in technology (telecom industry).

We have been here for two short weeks and it's almost starting to feel like home. We've passed a few milestones: buying our first bike from Marktplaats, getting bank accounts, pin cards, and OV-chipcards, plus celebrating our first NYE. I've now managed to get through the checkout at Albert Heijn without speaking English!

So far, there are two main burning questions that I am hoping the expatica community can help with.

First, we would love to find someone trustworthy to help with laundry, dusting, and routine cleaning weekly. I might be asking for the world here, but can any of you give me a referral for someone or a company that you trust? We are located in the Centrum/Jordaan area.

Second, none of the drug stores here seem to carry saline solution (used for contact lenses), only multipurpose solutions. Any ideas from fellow US expats where to find simple saline solution?

Cheers and a Gelukkig Nieuwjaar to all.

    SD

Hey Sara!  I'm a fairly new 6 month implant to the NL as well...got married to a Dutch man and am in grad school here at the moment.  I'm also from Atlanta (I have a lot of pent-up "yall's" in me!), but we live close to Rotterdam.  I hope you've found your solution...and I hope you brought plenty of your own painkillers and such.  Trust me: paracetemol will not cut it!
