Nobody that I know, or my instructor, knows what the new tests are like. But we suspect the reading and listening are a lot like the KNS. Loads of "what should zara and moe do in this common sense social situation".
The reading will probably be forms and news articles and the listening will probably be conversations between zara, moe, and people like the police, housing corps, banks, employers, etc.
Writing will be pencil and paper and a topic like "you didn't turn your homework in, explain to the teacher why."
We'll see what the new test brings at the end of the month.  less

What is the legal recourse for a lawyer not doing his job?
In a nutshell we had to hire a lawyer 2 months ago for a consumer warrenty case (shop is refusing to honor warrenty when he's bound to it under both dutch and EU law and it's far from a 20 euro item...more like a few thousand).

He has not done what he was supposed to, and was in our contract, and now he has probably caused us to lose a substantial amount of money due to the delay in getting the process started.  I'm afraid the judge will look at it and say too much time has gone by. ;-\

Even though you didn't earn any US based income or use any US based resources we're still required to report to Uncle Sam so he can get his cut too. The good news is, there is an exclusion for those who have worked in another country and owe taxes there (to avoid double taxation). I'm not sure what it was for 2012...probably around $90k or so. The moment you make a cent over the exclusion though you're liable for US taxes. You also have to report your bank accounts, interest, worldwide income, etc just like you were in the US as well. Since I don't have anything special going on, I do my taxes myself. I do a 1040 (since I'm married and filing single) and my 2555 which is the exclusion and residence test. Then I just mail it in with $0 owed.

If you get 45 or more at the embassy, that test is waived for the actual integration test.

I have a girl in my current class who's very fluent at conversational dutch. She decided to skip the inburgeringexamen and take the staatexamen and failed because she had absolutely no knowledge of dutch grammar.
I tested in my class at a B2 reading level (even though I'm doing the inburgering at the moment since I must have it done by the end of May) and was given a bunch of B2 text for self study on the side. It's not nu.nl or Jip and Janneke which I can read just fine. Unless you can read things like the Belastingdienst website or other various govt websites and understand it perfectly, it's not going to be easy to pass.
As for which takes the most study and prep? Staatexamen by far. I already had a dutch level for the inburgeringexamen before I decided to take this particular class because it taught the kennis over nederland stuff...really, I didn't need it. So what I do is use TaxSlayer. For $7 I can enter all my info (married, filing seperately + the exclusion stuff) then print it out. Where my hubby is concerned, I still enter his name and then random numbers for his SS#. Once I print it out, I just white out those numbers.
Then I have a letter that I print to include stating that the reason my spouse does not have a SS# is because he is a dutch citizen and has no American interests nor has he earned any income on American soil.

The biggest difference between inburgering and the staatexamin is the staatexamin is focues solely on the fluency of the language where the inburgering is lower speaking/reading level and is focused on "integration".

You can apply for a loan via DUO-IB-Group (I've done this since I can't really afford the 3500 for the class I'm taking) and it has a very low interest rate. Again, you have to use a school approved by Bilk op Werk.

And yes, if you get the loan, once you pass and get the 70% back, you can immediately use it to pay off 70% of the loan.
I've registered with http://www.ikwilnaarnederland.nl/index.php. I've heard good things, but I'm still a little less than impressed that they pushed classes back by 2 weeks AND changed the days after I made arrangements with work and in my personal life. o_O We'll see how it goes.  less
