My friend, who turned up six weeks ago, had been getting the thumbs up until she announced she was staying outside the city (some employers have to pay travel costs after a certain distance... weird but true). English-only didn't seem to be a problem there.

It's early days, but we're looking to create a major event in Noord Holland next year. Something that is sadly lacking outside of Amsterdam. We (Aussie expats and local Dutchies) are looking for expressions of interest from Aussie expats for attending a corker of a party: Australia Day 2013. While anyone will be welcome, we're specifically looking for expats who live in/nearby Alkmaar (Bergen, Egmond, Heiloo, Castricum etc). We're going to do our best to make it just like home. Sand, wading pools, (edible) snags on the barbie, cheap beer, Triple Js Hottest 100, and maybe even a bit of Ocker. Got no sun, but c'mon... we have a mirror ball! Does it sound like this might blow your hair back??
