I asked around about this my first year here back when I was buying a new kitchen and nobody knew what I was talking about.
They just don't have this in regular homes - though they may have it somewhere - I'm sure it would be expensive to install.![]()
It's like Deodorant soap - not here and and when I ask people - they look at me like I'm crazy.
I don't get it... I mean they been around north and south america for like ever! Strange because they are so useful. Save space in the garbage... My Dutch husband had not a clue eaither, I thought he was just a bit clueless but now I guess not.voodoodoll (Feb 10 2009, 08:52 PM) said: > original post
I really miss my garbage disposal and wondered
A) Where to get one.
What are they called in Dutch (if they really have one)
C) If they do not have them, why not? Any special reason?
Thanks...

I do not think they are good for the sewage system for one.

Voodoo Doll, no problem!
Write to American Broyeur Compacteur Diffusion in Noisy-le-Sec (vicinity of Paris), at the fol, lowing email address: ABCD6@wanadoo.fr
Their fax is (if you prefer that) : 01 48 48 80 69
They distribute wellknown American compactors since 1976. They will send you one according to your specifications, I'm sure.

Voodoo Doll,
Please let us know what you found out--if you were able to get it and if it cost an arm and a leg. I'd love one. My Dutchie does the exact same thing with throwing the left over scraps and rotten food in the toilet which totally disgusts me and I refuse to do. He also regularly takes the pipes under the kitchen sink apart to clean out the food particles that go down the drain. I have a feeling part of the Dutch resistance to garbage disposals is due to the use of electricity and water to run it but I tell him how he's wasting more by the flush of the toilet!

They're illegal in the Netherlands; food scraps are supposed to be put in the green afval bin instead. Not sure why, but I miss my garbage disposal, too!

They are called afvalvermaler. I highly doubt it's illegal as I just bought a kitchen from a local company and it was an appliance that was offered.
You can find them online; google 'afvalvermaler' and one link specifically that has them is ezproducts.nl
I can't give a product review, but I can guarantee they are available. I think the options are quite limited and I felt unsure about the return on my investment. It's not a popular product here so there's not a lot of competition or modern innovation in this area.
Personally after 7 years here I'm completely adjusted to sorting my garbage and green stuff and went for a quooker (instant hot/boiling water) instead.
I have no problem with the toilet method, but don't use it as it's not practical - toilet is too far away from kitchen.
P.S. Garbage compactors are also available, but same story: limited selection and a bit pricey.
