Hi all,
I just got a job offer to move to Amsterdam and am trying to gauge if it is a one worth taking.
They are offering me ~70K Euros per year + all relocation expenses covered. I know it's hard to tell someone what a good salary is for living in Amsterdam because it depends on people's personal preferences so maybe if I tell you that i will be moving and living alone, that i would like to be close to the city center but not right there, will not have a car, that i like to go out on weekends ( and some week days:)) and travel whenever the opportunity presents itself;that I am used to eating out in Boston- it's just how the culture is here- it's very afordable and who has time to cook?!? , would definitely require a gym membership and yes, company will apply for 30% rulling....maybe you can tell me if this salary could afford me a comfortable living in Amsterdam?!?!
I am currently making over $90K in Boston and am living a pretty nice lifestyle... would love an opportunity to live abroad and travel through Europe but don't want to have to scale down ...
any piece of feedback you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Una

They do pay low here as compared to The States but the lifestyle etc is very different so it's just better all around IMO.
At 70k you would be earning way more than the median income for Dutch people and you could certainly afford rent and all the social things you mentioned like eating out etc ... I would not give it another thought.
Rentals are high in AMS though so you are better off buying a house (an apartment) for many reasons.
Ask your company if they would be willing to secure housing for you or/and help you buy a house.
Welcome!
Yes, I agree. Reason numer 132 that I live here .. you don't have to work yourself into the ground here.
People work much less AND I get 33 days vacation a year. (I think by law, they have to give you at least 29 days a year.) I just depends on the company - but no more 10 days a year for vacation any more!
And yes, you will need to bring a cook with you. :)

Umm I don't know. I thought it was 29 but maybe it's 25 ... I don't see much difference to tell the truth because in The States you only get 10 days a year and that was my point - you get a lot more vacation days here.
Big difference.
