  We will be arriving in Brussels on September 30th around noon and were planning to spend one day in Brussels sleeping there that night before heading to Germany. I originally thought we would spend that day touring Brussels, but now I am wondering if we should leave from the airport and visit Bruges instead driving back to Brussels just to spend the night. Any suggestions which city is better? We will have a car and it looks like Bruges is just over an hour from the airport. The following morning we are driving to Bastogne and then onto Trier so we don't plan on spending any of the 31st in Brussels. 
  Any opinions and advice would be much appreciated!

  Brussels or Bruges? Well really you could add to those cities Leuven, Mechelen and Gent too. It's a personal choice, Brussels probably has more art galaries/museums but Bruges is arguably prettier.
  
  I certainly wouldn't dive into central Brussels though. I'd park the car and get the metro from somewhere like Stockel or Roodebeek metro stations. For Bruges (called Brugge), I'd park in the main train station car park and take the bus for free to the centre or walk the 15 minutes in.
  
  If you're staying overnight in Brussels, then it might make sense to choose Brussels.
