English-speaking South Africans may find the African languages a little intimidating. Whilst most are happy to greet in Afrikaans, learning 9 more is a barrier that very few cross. It's actually only a case of learning 8 new words. Zulu and Swati share "Sawubona". Sotho, Northern Sotho and Tswana share "Dumela". Venda has separate greetings for the sexes. And Tsonga is actually the only one worth worrying about pronouncing! The "x" is pronounced as a "sh". "Avoo-sh-eni". Nothing makes a better impression than a polite greeting in your own language.
