Major expat employers...Who are they???

Hello folks,

Let's make a list! Which companies are major expat employers (that hire most foreigners) in these cities:

The hague

Rotterdam

Utrecht

Eindhoven

Amsterdam

So when looking for job, you know where your CVs should definitely go:-!!

Hey canackywoman, well spotted :-)

The other thread gathers companies covering the whole country. With this thread, we'd like to make a list of expat companies by cities, in the hope that our users can get more "focused" when searching for a job :-)

Hmm...considering that I've worked in Naarden, Almere and Haarlem, you might consider putting "area" around those city names.

I also know about expat companies in Leiden, Delft, and Hoofddorp. And Noordwijk. Limiting it to the actual cities might not help job seekers.

What are you aiming for? Blue collar? White collar? Executive? Technical? Companies who are hiring expertise from abroad, or picking up the lesser-skilled, the trailing spouses with no chance of working in their former career due to lack of fluent Dutch, or just-landed/non-professionals?

Being frank, the 'big expat employers' are tied into preferred supplier contacts with the big or multilingual agents here for admin/customer service, even cleaning staff. Low-skilled jobs are monopolised by the Uitzendbureaus in most cases, or if direct, are on a 'work black' informal basis.

Most companies aren't recruiting directly at the moment, because they don't want to be tied into contracts with legal obligations or redundancy payout: they're all commitment-phobic. Some of those who are recruiting (naive)expats directly are blatently flouting the law by terminating everyone after the 3rd contract so they don't have to give a permanent contract.

The job market for English(only) speakers is almost-dead now, unless you are recruited from abroad as a skilled professional/knowledge worker.

Exactly. I'm lucky to be working right now, and even in a job that's geared to my education and experience, but I have a contract with my company's temp company (they usually hire contractors for construction sites) with no end date. I've been there over a year; a colleague who was hired two years before me through the temp agency was given a company contract after a year. My boss assumed the same would happen with me, but it's been 14 months now and I've heard nothing. Our whole department is now temp except my boss and one guy whose worked for the company since 1970.

I can't believe how much the doors have slammed shut since I moved here in 2004. I'm starting to believe that any advice I could possibly provide anyone moving here as a trailing spouse or for a Dutchie is outdated and useless now. If you're going to move here, make sure your partner can support you or that you are young enough to start your education all over again, starting with language training.

CW, I couldn't have said it better myself. I know that my department is circling the drain and that it's very unlikely I'll have a job to come back to after my maternity leave is over (I wouldn't be surprised if everyone is let go early next year). I've been job hunting (not two seriously, though) since about April and the jobs posted for English speakers without a second or third language PLUS Dutch are virtually non-existent.

I'm starting to push my husband to ask a pay rise or find a higher paying position just in case we find ourselves as a one income family by the middle of next year.

My Dutchie is lucky to be working at his age, and to gain a permanent contract after the age of 50! I figure this is as good as it's going to get here (barring a lottery win) and that we'd better just pay off the bills and leave for Canada in the next few years before we're too old...

The Hague (area): Shell, Heineken (to a lesser extent, office located near Leiden)

Amsterdam (area): Heineken

any information regarding low skill jobs, just arrived or blue collar jobs would be great. My experience is in constuction more specific stone masonry. Not sure what the job market is like for that particular work in NL but any information would be great concerning work other than professional types. Thnx

It is useful to visit Job Fairs. They usually separate them by industries. You can gather lots of information there. Good luck!
