The Parisian metro is very tricky to use for foreigners... and for French people too (I swear it as a French native from Northern France) 
There are 245 stations and 20 different lines so everything is done to make you confused when you are about to decide the way you have to go. I have read a very funny and helpful article on a Francophile website that could interest you all.
