Hi.
My mother, whom this is on behalf of, is a US national and now happily retired living in the UK. She always worked for Uncle Sam and her pension is in $US.
Can anyone recommend someone / a firm in England (either Yorkshire or London) to provide financial advice to an American permanently resident in the UK? Subjects we need to cover are (inevitably) tax, money transfers and inheritance planning.
Appreciate any suggestions!
Thanks
Hi John
Its pretty quiet on this forum unfortunately and I am afraid I am no expert.
What part of Yorkshire? There is a fairly substantial expat community around Leeds or Bradford in West Yorkshire and my guess would be that any decent firm of independent financial advisors would be clued up on these issues.
It's important to find an advisor who is independent because many (who are not) are involved in selling services/products for the organisation/bank they are employed by. In this link you can get a list of independent financial advisors:
http://www.ifa-guide.co.uk Sorry if this is information you already have and I hope your mum gets sound advice. Interest rates for savers are really poor here at the moment as you know. I don't know much about inheritance tax except that it is high!
I also think there is an amount your mum could transfer to you or others each year which is seen as a legitimate gift and therefore exempt from inheritance tax
Good Luck and I hope your mum enjoys a long happy retirement
