  Has anyone ever bothered with Haftpflichtversicherung? The recent storms made me think I should finally, finally get round to taking one out and pay a few Euros a month for peace of mind.
  
  Has anyone had any experience with that?

  Hope your german is good enough to understand it.
  You have to read through the AGBs before you sign an insurance contract. I think not many insurances pay if a storm destroys things. Do you own a house or rent a flat?

  OK, I twigged this before I lived with a German lady.
  She confirmed that I was right.
  You are regarded as insane if you you do not have this by
  normal citizens of the BRD.
  Try HUK24.de on the net. (or Scout ?? for a list)
  This is a litigious society and you can be taken to the cleaners
  by a moment's inattention.
  It's only EUR 30 per year or so, but the risk of not having it is just too great.
  Ask any German citizen with more than EUR 100 in their Konto....
  It covers silly things which could really cost you - and remember, in a dispute
  over whether you caused your neighbour to trip and break his/her leg - THEY will be insured, with smarty lawyers to make your life difficult.

  We got one after having to pay out for a new door handle on a Mercedes van, which we were staying in over night and it froze. Trying to open it the damn thing broke.
  
  We ended up paying about €200! And THAT belonged to a mate.
