This is my first post to the forum and it is in anticipation of my move to Germany in September of this year. I have been offered a choice between Köln and Düsseldorf, but I am struggling to make a decision. Just a little bit about me - 26 years old, American (Chicago), single, working in the accounting/finance industry. I have very limited German skills, but I am currently taking lessons here in the States and I plan to continue to do so upon arrival in Germany.
Based on my demographic - does anyone recommend either city? I realize they are both great places to live, but I am trying to determine which is a better fit for me. I would like to live somewhere with good nightlife, a fun culture, and enjoyable people.
From what I have gathered thus far:
- D-dorf has a better altstadt, shopping, restaurants, more expats, more English and regular (non-dialect) German is spoken.
- Cologne overall has nicer people, a very college/young professional feel.
Any feedback you can offer is appreciated (e.g. who has better pubic transport, more enjoyable culture/people, etc.). Thank you!
