Second hand car prices in France are a joke, but it's all relative. Just look at it as slower depreciation!
I ended up buying a Renault Megane on ebay.fr. It had 135k km on the clock and cost me 2500 euros (about 2.5 times the cost of a similar one in the UK!). Still, it wasn't a lot to spend on a car.
The seller was a few miles from the airport, so we were able to check it out on one trip and did the deal there and then.
We wanted something totally unmemorable that no one would want to pinch, as it spends most of the year parked at the airport. We've been out to our house 10 times this year and we're already ahead compared with hiring, plus you get taken more seriously by the locals if you've a french registered car.
As cardi said, LHD prices, which used to be lower in the UK, are now higher due to the number of Brits with places abroad. There are a few reasonable LHD deals to be had on ebay.co.uk, but I'm not sure if I want a car from Eastern Europe...
Mind you, if you're trying to trade in a LHD car in the UK, I'm sure the dealer will say it's not worth as much as RHD. Try and buy LHD and suddenly it's more expensive! I've got a "relatively" well trained secondhand dealer near me in the UK, so I might ask him what he thinks.
When we move over full-time I was wondering about checking used car prices in Holland, Belgium, Germany and Spain.
