Dutch cities tough on troublemakers during New Year

The city councils of The Hague and Rotterdam are using the new Football Act to ban people from certain areas in the city on New Year's Eve. In the past, New Year's celebrations have been marred by violence.

Three people in Rotterdam have such bad criminal records that they have been banned from certain parts of the city. The bans were imposed in October and and are valid for three months.

The Mayor of Rotterdam, Ahmed Aboutaleb has banned one person from looking up other ringleaders out of fears he plays a leading role in violence. This ban was also imposed in October with New Year's Eve in mind.

In The Hague, six people are not welcome in the city during the New Year's celebrations. In Rotterdam, one person has been banned from certain areas during the celebrations.

A handful of Rotterdammers have been given house arrest on New Year's Eve, in The Hague 15 people have been placed under house arrest during the celebrations.

Anyone found breaching the peace during the New Year's night will spend the night in the cell. In the past, troublemakers were released after the payment of a fine. Sometimes they would then reoffend. Penalties will be 75 percent higher than normal this year.

Anyone who assualts police officers, firemen or ambulance staff can expect a penalty that is 200 percent higher than normal.

I absolutely despise new years eve.

I'll be staying indoors, and as far as I'm concerned, it'll be a Friday like any other.

My girlfriend is away with her family, so I'll just get some joints in, some Weissbier and my cat for company.

I haven't celebrated NY's Eve in many years as I wanted to stay home and take care of my dog who was terrified of fireworks....now she's passed away, I am free to celebrate but not feeling inspired to have fireworks thrown at my head by neanderthals...

I think the build up to it is better than it was a few years back when it appeared to be a free for all with the fireworks when they were going off literally all day & evening. I heard they changed the law to allow this, another absurd law change. Before, you were only allowed to use the fireworks a few weeks before, I think. I always found them a complete waste of money, I mean, just a BANG, is it really worth it for all that money! The ones that light up the sky a bit are far better. Anyway, they calmed down the following years and it's pretty much quiet most of the time now around our area, apart from New Year's Eve of course when it's none bloody stop for about an hour all the way up and down the main road. They don't care at all about blocking the traffic.
I did hear that there were cases of some people jumping on top of cars and such like. Went to our local garage and was showed the roof of one car that was all sunken in, said that it would have to be completely replaced. Such crazy people around! Thankfully, our car is securely parked off road.
Anyway, apart from looking out the window a few times watching the sky all light up, I don't bother doing anything special myself. And these days, with my bloody guts playing up so much, I hardly touch alcohol now. Seems the older I get, the less I can enjoy! Bah bloody humbug...

Maybe you should try different alcoholic drinks...red wine is pretty easy on the stomach,a good bio beer instead of lagery stuff...benedictine liqueur and hot water is good...gluwien...

I like New Years Eve...although they go absolutely mental in mi 'hood....its very loud for 3 hours solid.

No, you can only use fireworks from 10.00 (AM) till 02.00 New Years Eve. And it has been like that for years.

As you can see there is a big gap between what is allowed and what happens in reality:

I prefer the big organized events hosted by the city. Where droves of people go to the river bank, and huge fireworks are lit from a barge - or some scenario like that.

The best I ever saw was for the Opsail2000 - when tall ships from around the world came to Norfolk, Virginia. Huge party, lots of music, entertainment etc. The final night was the fireworks spectacular. For the finale the lit off a batch, and they went up just a few feet, and looked like they just 'duded out' little embers just floated on the water. They kept lighting, seeming to ignore the ones in the water. The rest went up like normal, then all at once, the ones that went up went off, and the embers in the water just shot up a huge wall of sparkler-like flames. It was absolutely amazing.

As for the celebration here - when it is over, it looks like a war zone. But it is fun to experience at least once.

Erm...well its kind of an anglo-dutch mixture of slang...
a ponce is someone who is a bit posh or snobby and a kakker is the same in dutch but I thought the two sounded good together :) and I was indeed p!ssed off when they did it :)

One of my friends tells me that he's been having trouble with alcohol for sometime now, is it something that just happens as one gets older? I have tried some different drinks, used to love a glass of red wine just before eating my meal but not anymore it seems, though it can depend if it's a good red or not I suppose. Had a glass of sweet white wine Xmas day with the meal and that appeared to be ok... I dunno, it's hit & miss but following, it can be very uncomfortable, painful even.

Yep, mental is the word...

I'm talking Fullers, Theakstons, Youngs etc and don't forget the outrageous Thomas Hardy ale either!!

Oh, well may be I'm talking about the ones that just go bang then, I'm sure because it was all talked about one year... 2007 I think it was. I remember it so well because there were bang after bang all day, day after day for months before the New Year.

Latest News just in:
Police arrested two kids yesterday, one was drinking battery acid, and the other was eating fireworks. They charged one and let the other one off... boom boom!

Ha, now, that is probably a good idea! Actually, apple juice I do find good, but there's no fun in being sober... as for the Thai food, no, it's more likely to be an easily irritable bowel, syndrome.

All the beers from Brouwerij 't IJ are 'bio beers', as are real ales.
IMO Real ales should be served from the tap...and buying it here is quite expensive and I'm that keen on real ale out of bottles...and I'd rather buy local produce.
