Massive child abuse scandal in Amsterdam

A major sex abuse scandal involving dozens of children has come to light in Amsterdam.

Up to 50 children, mostly toddlers, were reportedly abused by a temp at two day care centres. The 27-year-old suspect has confirmed the systematic abuse during a period of a year and a half. He was arrested on Tuesday after pornographic images of the children appeared on internet sites in the United States.

The victims' parents and the parents of other toddlers who frequented the day care centres were informed at two closed-doors gatherings held at The Grand Hotel on Sunday evening. The meeting was attended by Amsterdam Mayor Eberhard van der Laan and Chief of Police Bernard Welten.

"The impact on the parents concerned is enormous," Mayor Van der Laan told a special news conference later on Sunday. He offered the parents professional assistance and called upon the media to observe restraint in covering this delicate case.

In a highly unusual move, booking photographs of the suspect were shown at the press conference. The man was born in Latvia but holds Dutch nationality. Mayor Van der Laan explained that the photo was also shown for the benefit of "thousands of parents in Amsterdam" who were worried that the detainee might be their babysitter.

Well, according to the report as posted above, "suspect has confirmed the systematic abuse during a period of a year and a half." he has admitted it and although this doesn't mean he has until proven in a court of law, I think it highly unlikely anyone would want to admit to something so highly abhorrent as this if he wasn't guilty...

I guess he is guilty. His full picture (without the eyes covered) was released by the police, that is very uncommon.

Yes he probably is.
There was a case not so long ago in the uk when a bloke was fired for having porn images of kids on his computer.He denied it all along.It turned out a colleague who was in competition for a promotion had put the images on his computer and called the cops.
It took him 2 years to clear his name.

Better to wait and be sure rather fall into the mob mentality.

This is so discusting! Heard this morning on the news that there's even more children who were abused by him.. Hope all the parents go to the police!

There is probably footage of him in the act so the chance of him being guilty would seem significant.
It appears he was found after American officers discovered footage with a Nijntje item on the scene which led the investigation to NL.

I wonder whether they will take away his citizenship and deport him back to Latvia after serving his sentence.

Uh, he had an earlier conviction in the German city of Heidelberg for the possession of child pornography... so many innocent children being damaged unnecessarily.

Parliament has been shocked by the news of Robert Mikelsons' earlier conviction in the German city of Heidelberg for the possession of child pornography. Mikelson is suspected of abusing dozens of children at two Amsterdam day care centres. If the Dutch authorities had known about the conviction, he never would have been issued a 'certificate of moral conduct', which is compulsory for child care workers.

MP Ard van der Steur of the conservative VVD said an international register of convictions was a logical step, but pointed out that it would be very complicated to get the data from all EU countries in a single data base. Also, access to such a system would have to be tightly controlled.

His colleague Madeleine van Toorenburg of the Christian democratic CDA spoke of a shocking report. “We have already on several occasions argued for an international certificate of moral conduct. And Deputy Justice Minister Fred Teeven has raised the issue in Brussels. It's very sad that the need for such a European certificate of moral conduct should be demonstrated so soon.”

Freedom Party Lilian Helder said it was “madness” that EU countries are unable to access each other's criminal records. She wants this to change as soon as possible.

U wonder what is this phenomena about child abuses around the world. It is discustin g off course, but how to explain surge in these cases in last ~ 10 years.

Maybe soon we will hear something about it through leaked documents?

If only there was a way to link computers together over a distance; a sort of interlaced network where crucial information could be shared.

Maybe you can explain why the Dutch are too blame that there apparently is no European database for sex offenders? But I guess that question is too straightforward for you to answer.

I was commenting on the fact that Ard van der Steur (MP-VVD) was saying what a good thing a common database would be, and that it obviously would have prevented the current atrocity, but golly it would be complicated. Anyone with a basic understanding of databases and the net knows it's not that complicated. I though NL considered itself at the forefront of IT (and other areas as well: "gidsland", remember? ).

Essentially, he was justifying why kids had to suffer at the hands of a pedophile. Apparently that doesn't bother you.

Things can be complicated in more then one way. Technical for example, but also political.

You've brilliantly illustrated why I said the local motto is "NL: waar alles mag maar niets kan". Thank you.

It's fair to guess you don't have kids, pepe; if you did, you'd realize this type lame excuse-making when innocent toddlers are involved is absolutely inexcusable.
