  Amsterdam PD and their Brit counterparts have started 'operation return' so.... I wonder whether some of them are members here....

  My Dutch is a bit rusty - but in the second video (the news report with the housewife interviews), did the senior policeman suggest that landlords ought to give the cops a ring before letting property to British tenants?
  
  A bit extreme, surely? It wasn't the tenant who smashed the place to bits - it was the police.

  No, he said that neighbors can call the police when some shady Brits are moving to some expensive housing, and it isn't clear who and what they are.

  How is that relevant? The smashing of the house wasn't the crime.

  But apart from them being non-Dutch, why shouldn't EU citizens be able to move into expensive houses in Holland without being referred by their neighbours for a police check?
  
  The whole reason British criminals like to hide out in the Low Country is their reliance on Dutch people's absolute indifference to their presence.
  
  True, the smashing of the house wasn't the crime, but it was the only disturbance of the peace to take place in Holland.
  
  The landlord and the neighbours surely can't be interested in what the Brit did before he moved to their dorp? Do they ask the makkelaar about his dodgy clients, or tell tales about the wealthy wiet grower to the police? No. Because they are Dutch.
  
  If the cop had made a general point about the need to grass your neighbours up, fine. People will ignore him. Instead, he played to Dutch xenophobia.

  The landlord and makelaar were probably clueless, the common way of renting in a similar situation like this is to use what the Dutch call a katvanger, basically a front guy for administrative purposes.
  
  
  When I just moved to NL I used to frequent the Brit and Irish pubs and was surprised by the number of folks I met there who happily told me they were on the run from the law, other criminals or just a crazy ex.
  
  Bars in Panama, Pattaya and Belize are probably similar that way except add some Americans to the mix.
