African hair salon - desperately looking!

Hi all..i wonder if you could help me...my hair is fast becoming a disaster...im struggling to find an African hair salon in the netherlands....where they do weaving, relaxing, braiding etc etc....please if you know of one could you give me a rating as well as their contact details....im very desperate. Try this place it's called hairpolice they are at, Geelvincksteeg 10,1017 BE Amsterdam.They are between the Flower Market and the Reguliersdwarstraat
They do Dreads Extensions Cuts & Colours Braids(braiding under-arm and pubic hairs are a speciality)Ask for Damian he's an Aussie.He is the manager and is a terrific stylist (he is Bald)

Not sure where your are located but in The Hague within a couple of minutes from Den Haag HS station there are 2 or more West African sallons who should be up to the job. Can get you contact info if need be.

There are zillions of hair shops that cater to people of African descent. Mostly they are in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Den Haag.

Two easy methods to find GOOD African Hair Salons in The Hague:

1) look at the ads in the FREE monthly magazine PLEASURE distributed almost everywhere in the "exotic" stores, including hairxdressers, snackbars and restaurants in The Hague. You'll find the magazine easily. Of course, I can't judge the quality of their work by watching their ad but you can have a look at their salon. Many are situated in the neighbourhood called "Transvaal". The names of the streets are South African. The most important one is Valeriusstraat. Ask one of the Indian/Pakistan retailers in that street for example.

2) just ask some of the many African ladies doing their shopping on the The Hague Market (CosterMarkt, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday). Frequently they do the braiding themselves for about 80 to 100€ and EXCELLENT quality (keeping two to three months). Don't be afraid to ask. If they don't do it, they frequently know a sister or cousin who does it at home and is very eager to make some money! Once again, from this point here I cannot guarantee quality but in my experience ( my ex wife) it was always tremendously well done and very cheap!

But this person doesn't indicate where she actually lives in The Netherlands - that's why I mentioned all three of those cities.

Another tip for Lerato ( and other ladies with extensions):

if you want to save time and money...and have some courage, you might, after having made an appointment with a hairdressing lady, remove your old extensions yourself the night before and give your own hair a good wash! One can always find something to cover the head when visiting the hairdresser next morning or afternoon! Depending on the length of the extensions this trick will save you HOURS!

Oh yes.. I used to have 'the zillions' and it took me 15 hours to get them all out, comb and wash and prep. for the new 'zillions'.

I live in Amstelveen and dont imagine there would be any African hair salons on this side (if im wrong, then i'd be very happy because then i wont have to travel far to do my hair!!!) . I quite like the idea of the ladies who do hair from home! Does anyone have a number for any of these ladies??? I called one hair salon in Amsterdam and nearly fell off the chair when they told me what they charged for weaving!!!

I can only recommend you what I already did:
go to your local market or better, to the Albert Cuyp market in Amsterdam, and just ask African ladies from Ghana or Nigeria (you can easily recognise their colourful dresses). I know it's intimidating at first because you don't know them of course, but you'll see they are very friendly and very eager to help you and they will point you in the right direction.
Another good possibility is to visit a good (Pakistan/Indian/Surinam) store in Amstelveen or Amsterdam where they sell the hair, gels, combs, etc. and ask them if they know a hairdresser. They ALWAYS know at least a few home hairdressers who buy their products in their stores! Maybe there is one near you!

I totally agree with Seo2007.

When I first moved here and couldn't find a beauty supply shop .. I just drove into Amsterdam and the FIRST black lady saw with braids ... I asked her WHERE she got her hair done. (Now this was mainly in sign language as I knew very little Dutch!)

She didn't know any English, but she directed me to follow her by car to a shop.

That's how I found my first beauty supply shop in Amsterdam.

You really have you step out of your comfort zone and speak to complete strangers if you need this sort of information.

Like seo2007 says, they will be more than happy to set you on the right path .... as they too were in the exact same situation when they moved here.

You have to network.

(btw, I started my own Black womans group right here in Holland quite some years ago if you just want to get 'connected'. We have ohhh so much fun! If you are interested give me your email address.)

My wife gets her braids applied in Rotterdam by the best braiders in Holland she says. It is worth the drive though I'm not sure of the address because the woman works in her home. Bob.

Yes, there are a lot of shops in Rotterdam and lots of people that work out of their home. )

The price is right ... though sometimes they braid too tight so you have to be careful.

Hi Lerato

Have you found someone who does braids here in Amsterdam the way they do braids back home?? (I'm assuming your South African too from your name). If so I'd really appreciate some contact details. I've lived here for the past six months but I'm having no joy. If there is anyone who can help it will be much appreciated.

Why don't you go to the Bijlmer (Amsterdam Zuid Oost), a metro ride from Centraal Station. There's a huge community of African people living there. There must be some hairdressers there.
You could always ask around.

There's a black hairdressing salon on the Haarlemmerstraat too. (near CS).

Maybe googling would throw up some clues too.

I am too looking for a hairdresser, but to get a press and trim, I'm happy to have found all your replies, my hair is breaking off like crazy...its been over 6 months since I got a trim. I have natural hair, so you can't let just anyone loose in your head!! I'm in Delft, so I guess I'll try the options in Den Haag.

Hello! I've recently moved to Rotterdam and am seeking someone for braids and natural hair. I'm definitely one of those people who'll go up to someone with nice hair, but I haven't seen anything I like yet! lol Thanks!

When I lived in Rotter, I used to get products at MeGorgeous at West Kruiskade 37 B Tel: 010-414 07 17. and go to ethiopian hair salon for relaxer and cut. But for daily simple blow dry and press...I went to a dresser at Hotel NewYork (was very close to my flat).
MeGorgeous may be able to give you contact info for the type of hairdresser you are looking for. BTW, Aminata is right, Bijlmer is a good place to look for braiding and such. Good Luck
