I'm preparing to move from California to Barcelona in April. I'm just starting to look into how to get my stuff across the Atlantic. I have to pay out of pocket, so I'm looking for the cheaper options, probably more on the DIY end than the full-service moving companies. For those who have done this in the last couple years, what companies did you use, and would you recommend them to others? Any lessons you learned from the process that you can share?
I'm also making a list of things to purchase and bring along. I plan to stock up on anything that I'll want that is hard to find there, or much more expensive, or just nostalgic. But I don't have a clear sense of what that will be.
What do you miss and wish you brought along? What do you have trouble finding or make do without because it's too expensive? This could be shoes, food, sharpies, whatever.
