  hello all!

   

  I wanted to e file my taxes, and I'm not really sure what to file under.  I'm an American who married a Dutch man back in May '12, but we lived in separate countries and on separate incomes.  I am in grad school and here on a study visa since October (just got the card in December, bsn in January).  The tax software is asking for my husband's ssn, which, of course, he does not have.  I thought I should file as 'married, filing separately.'  Is that correct?  And if so, how do I get around my hub's non-existent ssn?

  I found the information...he needs an ITIN number.

  Yea, unless you get the ITIN you can't efile. I refuse to get one for my hubby. IMO Uncle Sam doesn't need to know anymore about my life than he absolutely has to.
  
  So what I do is use TaxSlayer. For $7 I can enter all my info (married, filing seperately + the exclusion stuff) then print it out. Where my hubby is concerned, I still enter his name and then random numbers for his SS#. Once I print it out, I just white out those numbers.
  
  Then I have a letter that I print to include stating that the reason my spouse does not have a SS# is because he is a dutch citizen and has no American interests nor has he earned any income on American soil.
  
  I've been doing this since 2010 and haven't had one question from the IRS.
