And those sharp corners, damn, you make one wrong move in that place and it'll be a blood bath!

Not one place wanted to do anything, I phoned some shops, but always the same, what annoys me the most about most Dutch businesses is the total lack of interest & lack of enthusiasm! unbelievable!

This has been my point for some time. Except for drinking coffee, walkin in the Veluwe forrest, riding a bike on a dyke, smoking cigarettes, football and ice skating, this place is devoid of passion.
Except with the exception of possibly having a weather photo put on any of the news channels (my neighbor walks around all day with a camera in hops of being selected), I can not think of one thing they are really excited about.
... drives me up the freaking wall I tell 'ya.

3. Thermostat control: These are highly sensitive. Ensure that this is installed in a draught-free position and it need not be in a living-room. There are some very sexy devices available from Jung (a high-quality German brand). The most commonly used device here is Honeywell; a bulky device offering you little other than the obvious controls. The Jung electrical plugs and switches are also exceptional and cost about half the price if you buy online from a German supplier.
Why on earth you would want a sexy (looking I presume) device to operate the heating I don't know... illuminatus (Jan 12 2011, 10:24 AM) said: > original post

I'm afraid this is the precise experience that we're having with our builder2. Last time I saw him, in July 2010, when I pointed out to him that he'd only done 20 days work in the last year, he got angry with me saying, what must I do, what must I do! I've lost money on this job... blah, blah, blah. He's lied and let us down numerous times now but as he owes us a ruined toilet seat (and this is not just the cheap toilet seat you see in Praxis) & toilet flush cover and also he supplied us with a bent radiator (I remember him saying that he managed to get it cheap as they were going to dump it but when I later pointed it out, after I noticed the bend, that this was probably the reason why they were going to dump it and the reason why he got it cheap, he sharply denied it! I mean the bend was so obvious that he couldn't really have missed it and bet that he was hoping that I wouldn't notice it as he had it covered with a bit of cardboard) and other numerous work that needs doing again, I feel tied as I don't want to fork out yet more money going with yet another builder but it's gone on for so long now, I feel we'll just have to go find someone else...

The really Dutch thing I have noticed are these incredibly large dining room tables. Ours sits 8 people - and I hate it. We have never had more the 4 at it!

I totally undersand how p!ssed off you must be Wes.
And I think you cope with that crap better than the best of us.
To rise above it is a strain, but I do try. It's hard to laugh at the hall floor tiles that give a squeak as you walk on them, the extractor fan in the bathroom that hasn't been wired correctly, the endless draughts that come through all the nooks and crannies in the bathroom sockets and lights in the false ceiling and also the bedroom when the wind blows, the wanky wall tile in the bathroom, the draft around the window in the bathroom, the cracking in the plaster work in the bedroom and attic in the corner joints, flooding with the waste pipe when the washing machine empties in the bathroom, the crappy paint work in the bedroom and attic, the cracking/crumbling of grouting in the floor tiles in the bathroom and hall & kitchen, the leaking of the waste pipe in the toilet hand basin, cracking of grouting on wall tiles in the toilet room, the lack of planning in the kitchen when it was later discovered that the first builder forgot to mention that the ceiling was being lowered throughout as we were ordering ceiling to floor kitchen cupboards... the first builder, on planning that all the work would only take a matter of months, asked for the kitchen fixtures and fittings to be ready before he started in October 2008. He left in Jan 2009 (by which time much of the bathroom had been kitted out) and the kitchen wasn't fitted until the summer of 2009 by the second builder a year later. By which time, the cupboard doors became warped as all the fixtures and fittings were held in storage that wasn't heated and so became damaged during the winter months so we had to re order and there after they couldn't for some reason get the bloody colour exactly right so we had to wait and wait again time after time for the re-orders. Oh, the cracked floor tile in the kitchen I noticed, the scratched wall tile in the kitchen and the other numerous things I can't readily remember... oh I've gone mad alright, I've cried my eyes out, I've ranted and raved at these people but does it really help? No, I'm afraid it doesn't. They've laughed while I've cried in another room. I feel so badly about it all that I feel like I want to go and live somewhere else and start again... preferably in another country.

Well, then I don't know were you live and who you know but most Dutch houses are really not large enough for 8 person dining table

Those large tables are so that people can invite their friends

Those large tables are so that people can invite their friends, so they can cook and dine together. That's why they also want large open kitchens. There is only one problem: It never happens.

You really have a renovation horror story wesley. I am about to start renovating as well and now I am not only scarred of bankrupcy but also of unreliable/bastard builders.

Well, I only hope that you have far better luck than we've had and that it goes all as planned and not like ours have gone.... I'm quite sure that there are good ones out there somewhere. Let us know if you find one!![]()

Before Pepe C and Mr. Fook reply – yes I know, yes I’m sure you are correct, yes I know you never fly but built your own boat and paddle across the ocean. Blah blah blah.

Are you implying that KLM and Dutch airlines/airports are the only ones that charge people for overweight?
Oh, and KLM doesn't have 1st class.
if I were you I would use a broomstick.
