Israeli author Zeruya Shalev in conversation

Event Details

  • In the second ‘Boek & Meester’, the best-selling Israeli author Zeruya Shalev will be talking (in English) to Ernest van der Kwast about her new novel, 'Pain'.

Tickets (EUR 10) on the door or viahttp://boekenmeester.nl/event/zeruya-shalev/ (website in Dutch).

Boek & Meester interviews are characterised by animated conversation with excerpts from the book or books under discussion and plenty of opportunity for the audience to put their own questions to the author.

Zeruya Shalev is, with David Grossman and Amos Oz, the most read author from Israel. All her novels are international best sellers selling more than five million copies. Her work has been translated into twenty languages.

Ten years ago, Iris was badly wounded in a bomb attack in Jerusalem. The wounds and complicated fractures have healed and the terrible pictures and sounds have been buried somewhere in her memory. But one day, everything comes back and she is a woman in pain again.

Like tectonic plates which move against each other, Iris’ life is thrown upside down. The past is no memory, but ferociously present: the flames of the bus, which exploded the moment she wanted to overtake it, the burning pain which followed, and the longing which she, as a seventeen year old, felt for a young man: her true love. And it is precisely him who she meets, thirty years later, when she goes back to hospital for the pain which has returned, and it is this man who has to treat her. From that moment, she feels another pain, the sorrow she felt as a girl when he left her.

Pain is a novel which has been written with furious intensity, intoxicating the reader with long, flowing sentences which allow you to peer deeper into Iris’ soul. A novel about doubt, longing, anger, guilt, but above all else, love.
