WEEKEND IN BETWEEN TWO COUNTRIES (23-24 JUNE)

Event Details

  • MADRIDBABEL: WEEKEND IN BETWEEN TWO COUNTRIES
Arribes del Duero: Nature, villages, sailing, wines, Night of San Juan, surprises… and for desert, Salamanca (23-24 June)

Where the River Duero turns international, becoming “Douro” in its course through neighbouring Portugal, it loses its steady flow through the Castilian plain squeezing, to our amazement, into a labyrinth of gorges which appears as impressive to us due to its immensity. In this magical environment, dominated by steep walls, and where vultures, black stalks, Royal eagles, etc., have found the ideal shelter. We will discover the impressive border location of Arribes, both sailing and visiting the villages, tasting wines in caves, enjoying the Night of San Juan, and all completed with surprises and with the final desert of the beautiful and fun city of Salamanca, World Heritage jewel.

    ITINERARY

SATURDAY 23 JUNE: MADRID / FERMOSELLE / SAUCELLE

We will leave Madrid at 8:30 from the Glorieta de Atocha (in front of the Ministry of Agriculture) towards a place so unknown as interesting and spectacular. We will cross the Castilian plateau, offering, during this time of the year, a wonderful range of colours. After leaving behind places filled with history, we will arrive at Fermoselle, a town in Zamora centered around the rock that saw it come to life. A pleasant surprise will await us in this pretty village on the frontier: its caves of unknown origin have confidentially maintained the original Arribes wines which we will taste there. After lunch sail on a boat and carry out a beautiful boat trip down the river through the narrowest part of the Douro River. Later we will travel to Saucelle, where we will stay the night. After having dinner in a fun rural setting we will celebrate the Night of San Juan, which is the shortest of the year.

SUNDAY 24 JUNE: SAUCELLE / SALAMANCA / MADRID

Without waking up too early we will head towards the oldest and most beautiful almazaras (oil mills) in Castile, which will captivate us with their charm and oils which we will taste with bread
Later we will head to mythical Salamanca, where we will eat and where we will have time to walk around its impressive old part of town. Its medieval layout, filled with monuments, will captivate us and will serve as the special finishing touch to our weekend throughout one of the most unknown and most surprising areas of the Iberian Peninsula: Los Arribes del Duero
