During Cine Expat - Amsterdam we screen foreign language films with English subtitles. Next up on May 14th at 9PM: THE OTHER SIDE OF HOPE by acclaimed director Aki Kaurismäki (Le Havre), a comedy drama about the unlikely friendship between a Finnish traveling salesman and a Syrian refugee.
Wilkström (Sakari Kuosmanen) is on the verge of a new life when he leaves his wife and sells all his inventory to purchase a restaurant. Meanwhile, Syrian refugee Khaled (Sherwan Haji) arrives in the same little harbour town. He lost nearly his entire family during the war in Aleppo. His sister is still alive, but somewhere on the rough journey through Europe, they lost each other. Khaled and Wilkström each try to make the best out of their situations, until the day their paths meet.
The Other Side of Hope builds on the same themes present in Kaurismäki's Le Havre (2011), in which a shoe shiner shelters a young African migrant on the run from the police. The Other Side of Hope won the Silver Bear for best director at the 2017 filmfestival in Berlin. "Winsome, sweet, and often very funny, The Other Side of Hope is more of the same from Kaurismäki, and thank God for that."- The Guardian.
