"In Korea, 1930's, the poor Sook-Hee gets the chance of a lifetime when she is hired as a handmaiden to the Japanese heiress Lady Hideko, but secretly she is involved in a plot to defraud her. In her disguise as a handmaiden, she has to trick Lady Hideko into a marriage with the **** 'Count Fuijwara'. If she succeeds, she will be handed a large sum of money. But what wasn't part of the plan was Sook-Hee falling in love with Lady Hideko. This beautiful, fragile woman seems to be the woman of her dreams. Sook-Hee decides to sabotage Fuijwara, but he has some tricks up his sleeve as well. The Handmaiden is based on the British bestseller Fingersmith by Sarah Waters. Acclaimed director Park Chan-Wook changed the scenery of this Victorian tale to 1930's Korea, when it was colonized by the Japanese. According to Indiewire, 'the film deserves Oscar nominations in every technical categroy', with its fluid and elegant camerawork, and vivid production design that is styled to perfection.
